Have you ever had a bad boss? Have you ever been a boss and wondered why management is neither taught nor valued? Either way, you know how much misery in the world is caused by bad managers. At Candor, Inc. we want to fix that.

We are building a software system to empower Radically Candid managers. The software coaches managers through the fundamentals of creating a culture of feedback, building dynamic teams, and achieving results collaboratively. Our mission is to help people love their work and the people they work with.

If you care about creating great working environments, if you want to rid the world of political BS, if you believe that technology can help people change their behavior, then you will be inspired by what we are trying to achieve at Candor.

About Candor, Inc.

Candor’s product will include a library of online education (think “stack overflow for managers”), a suite of functionality including a feedback gauge, a career conversations planning tool, a 1:1 utility, and a dozen other features. This functionality will be accessible from iOS/Android native apps, a web app, a slack bot, email a chatbot, calendar, etc. A service will prioritize and mediate tasks for managers and deliver customized tips for improvement.

Candor is already generating significant revenue, and has built broad awareness in the market. Candor’s board is chaired by Shona Brown, former SVP of Business Operations at Google. Early investors include Michael Dearing from Harrison Metal, Hunter Walk from Homebrew, Aileen Lee from CowboyVC, and Slack Fund.

Kim led AdSense, YouTube, and DoubleClick sales and operations at Google. She designed and taught Apple’s curriculum for managers and she’s been a CEO coach for Dick Costolo at Twitter, Drew Houston at Dropbox, Ryan Smith at Qualtrics, and others. She is also the author of Radical Candor to be published in March 2017.

Russ has led 700- person teams and $700M businesses at places like Google and Twitter. He was a Company Commander in the Marines early in his career and worked closely with Kim to develop the ideas and techniques described in the book Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss without Losing Your Humanity.

  • CONTACT US at jobs@radicalcandor.com

In this role, you will be responsible for full stack product design for the Candor Coach product. We define full stack design:

  • Concept development

    • Purpose: help the team crystalize / (wireframes and interactions) ideas into tangible features – not necessarily feature definition, more to answer the question “what could this be?”
    • Activities: Taking ideas and turning them into high fidelity mockups.
  • Early prototyping and user feedback

    • Purpose: to get early feedback from users on features ideas/concepts.
    • Activities: Creating variety of prototypes (paper prototypes, sketch files, invision/proto.io, clickable prototypes, working with developers on working prototypes, etc).
  • Implementation

    • Purpose: turn bits and pieces from prototype into a holistic app and then build
    • Activities: More strategic things such as overall site nav/organization, information architecture, the core model of user interaction, choice architecture, identifying primary actions on a page, personas
    • Building the application
      • Creating assets
      • Specifying the page-to-page, action-to-action flow
      • Specifying page layout (e.g., padding, line height, etc..)
  • Iteration while in production

    • Purpose: improve upon what’s there in data-informed way
    • Activities: Getting user feedback, improving features
      • User studies, surveys, focus groups
      • Using quantitative metrics to guide design

Of those 4 areas, priority order is:

  1. Concept development
  2. Implementation
  3. Early prototyping
  4. Iteration while in production.

On the Designer skill continuum from Visual Design (look and feel) to Interaction Design (how it works), we are looking for someone who is more biased towards Interaction Design. We define each as:

Visual Design – “Look and feel”

  • User’s emotional connection
  • Brand
  • Voice
  • Color palette
  • Typography

Example for a door in your house:

Color, style, location within frame/how it’s situated

Interaction Design – “How it works”

  • Information hierarchy
  • Page flow
  • Where does a user go when they tap here?
  • Modal vs. next screen

Example for a door in your house:

Type (hinge, sliding, rotating), Swing in/out/both ways?, door knob/panel/handle, ease of grabbing/tactile feedback

To have full success in the role, you must:

  • Facilitate – be able to facilitate highly quality design-focused discussions with multi-disciplinary team (product, eng, marketing, co-founders). You will be the design thought partner who makes our high level vision a reality, and, more importantly, you’ll change many of our ideas and improve our thinking with your own.  To have full success in the role, you must:
  • Prioritize – be able to prioritize design work given the natural constraints of our small team. Balance blue sky thinking, with practical decision making given a small team of developers.
  • Work collaboratively – be able to work collaboratively with our multi-disciplinary team to bring our shared vision to life. Our team prioritizes learning, puts customers first, tests hypotheses quickly, and iterates often.
  • Advocate for design – be able to take a full seat at the product/eng table and advocate for design needs.  You’ll need to be an integral part of the entire product lifecycle: facilitating brainstorming sessions, testing new product concepts, defining user flows for multiple platforms, developing high-fidelity mockups, and pairing with developers.
  • Walk away from your designsbe able to de-personalize your work and walk away from designs that don’t test well or that the team does not want to utilize.
  • Be enthusiastic about the opportunity to create a whole new category of SaaS product–a suite of services and utilities built by managers for managers. Ideally, you have significant prior experience designing web & mobile SaaS platforms.
